The Hawaii Island Humane Society is continuing to assess the lava threat to Puna residents and their animals. Should the need arise, HIHS Keaau Shelter will contact volunteers for assistance.

HIHS is looking for volunteers. Those able and willing to assist can call the Keaau Shelter at 966-5458 to put name on the volunteer call list.

The mission of HIHS is to promote respect for all animals, prevent cruelty to animals, eliminate pet overpopulation, and enhance the bond between humans and animals. HIHS holds a contract with Hawaii County to enforce certain animal-related laws and it offers 24-hour service for injured animals and other animal emergencies, humane education classes, low-cost spay and neuter services, lost and found assistance, micro-chipping and more.
